GOLD OGRE gave AI agents VPN credentials and objectives, and the agents ran Active Directory discovery, credential attacks and lateral movement in Aur0ra ransomware intrusions, Sophos reports. Humans kept initial access and deployment.

## What happened

Sophos Counter Threat Unit researchers published their analysis of GOLD OGRE on October 29, 2026, built on Cursor artifacts recovered from an exposed directory in late August 2026. The group operates Aur0ra ransomware, has been active since April 2026, and had nearly 40 victims named on its leak site through September 2026. Human operators handed the agents VPN credentials, SOCKS access, targets and objectives.

## How it works

Operators prompted Cursor's Composer agentic coding model, backed by models from Anthropic, xAI and Moonshot, to carry out the middle of each intrusion. The agents ran network and Active Directory discovery, then password spraying, Kerberoasting, NTLM coercion and relay, and credential extraction from files and backups. When a command failed, the agents refined it, edited scripts and tried another route. Guardrails were bypassed by framing the work as authorized red team or diagnostics testing.

## Who is affected

Organizations exposing VPN services to the internet are the entry point GOLD OGRE uses, with stolen credentials rather than a new flaw. Sophos says most Aur0ra victims sit in the United States and western Europe, ransom demands have exceeded $1 million, and dwell time runs from 12 hours to 9 days. In a subset of environments the agents reached domain management access.

## What to do

Patch internet-facing devices and deploy phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, because the way in is still stolen credentials. Segment critical servers, isolate backups, review domain administrator privileges, and add privileged access management and application controls to limit movement once an agent is inside. Treat endpoint detection alerts as urgent, since AI shortens the time between stages.

## Quick facts

- **Threat group:** GOLD OGRE, operator of Aur0ra ransomware, active since April 2026
- **AI tooling:** Cursor Composer, with models from Anthropic, xAI and Moonshot
- **Agent tasks:** AD discovery, credential attacks, lateral movement, collection, exfiltration to S3
- **Human-controlled:** Initial access and ransomware deployment
- **Victims:** Nearly 40 on the leak site through September 2026; 3 after agents reached domain management
- **Dwell time:** 12 hours to 9 days
- **Found by:** Sophos Counter Threat Unit, from artifacts recovered in late August 2026

## Questions

### Did AI run the Aur0ra attacks on its own?

No. Sophos describes AI-assisted intrusions, not autonomous ones. Human operators supplied VPN credentials, SOCKS access, targets and objectives, and kept control of both initial access and ransomware deployment. The agents handled discovery, credential attacks and lateral movement in between, with limited human involvement. Sophos notes that Gambit Security and CloudSEK read the same exposed directory and differ on how much the agents executed.

### How did GOLD OGRE get past the AI tools' safeguards?

Operators framed the intrusions to the AI tools as authorized red team activity or diagnostics testing. Sophos reports that this framing was enough for the agents to proceed with reconnaissance, credential attacks and lateral movement against live networks. Prompts were written in Russian, and Cyrillic keyboard slips in the logs point to Russian-speaking operators.

### Will other ransomware groups copy this?

Sophos Counter Threat Unit judges it highly likely that other ransomware groups and affiliates will embed AI agents such as Cursor into their operations. Sophos also assesses with high confidence that GOLD OGRE first used AI to test tool evasion against endpoint detection products in a Cursor-enabled framework, then supplied similar technology to Aur0ra associates.
